Bipolar disorder cause you to hear voices?

crystaldeniseroberts asked:

Hi, my name is Crystal and I am 27 years old. I was diagnosed at 14 I believe as a manic-depressant. I went through a rough drug phase that ended at 24 years old using crack and cocaine. I am almost 3 years clean and it seems like the voices are getting worse. It seems that none of the meds are working anymore and I am comming off of them as they were making the voices worse. I am trying to come back to reality. Can anyone relate to this? Any suggestions on what to do when the voices start? I usually start panicking. Thanks, Crystal

yes, bipolar disorder can cause you to hear voices, just so you know, withdrawal from cocaine can too, I had a friend who was on coke and crack and when he quit he used to hear people talking to him when there was nobody there. you might also be misdiagnosed and have schizo-affective disorder, which has both the symptoms of bipolar disorder and some of the symptoms of schizophrenia ( which does cause one to hear voices as well)

There is bipolar with psychotic features that can cause you to hear voices. I have schizophrenia but I have found that the voices are easier to deal with when I am stable with life. Sometimes it take therapy and sometimes it takes the right medications to get you stable with life and for me it just took growing up and honestly giving up. The voices can say whatever they want and I don’t listen, because they aren’t real. You should go back to your doctor and try a different med, and go to a therapist to learn how to deal with what feelings you are having that make what the voices are saying bother you. That is really all you can do.

I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder for 11 years. I am in my early 40’s. I’ve never done drugs or alcohol. And I’ve never heard voices – ever. So there must be other influences causing you to hear voices. I recommend you talking with your psychiatrist (as manic-depressive is also known as bipolar disorder). The drug use may have been a contributing factor. As far as what to do when the voices start? Ignore them. They are not real anyway. They are made up in your own mind. I hope you get help with this soon. My best to you.

I understand all this from working in the field of addiction and mental health. My friends come from my addiction days and we all have either depression or bi-polar. I’ve been sober for 5 years (I relapsed after 10 years.) It’s normal to try and self-medicate with illegal drugs or alcohol. Bi-polars mostly use cocaine or other stimulants. Cocaine really does a number on your brain chemistry.
Your medication can stop working but can be replaced by another drug or drug cocktail. Pharmaceuticals are the main treatment for this disorder. You want the chemicals in your brain to be at their normal levels.
Are you coming off your meds under a qualified doctor’s care? If not then get back on your meds now. These drugs are powerful and not only could the voices get worse, you can feel suicidal or fall into a serious depression and return to drug abuse.
I ran out of money for effexor once and I was a lunatic two days later. It scared me to pieces with neurons misfiring causing all sorts of side effects-it felt like lightening was hitting my head, I spoke in shorthand because I was thinking to fast and it was going to get worse.
You have some complicated things happening in your brain and it’s dangerous to fool around with medications. As a drug abusers we have a contaminated way of viewing medication. But I’ve seen what happens to others regularly and it scares me.
Talking someone down when they are hearing voices is hard.

they have a psychosis forum.
Yahoo answers is not a great place to get help with major health problems. You have to see a doctor, this is serious stuff. I would call it an emergency if you have gone cold turkey.
