Selecting an antidepressant dose is always a trade-off between effectiveness on the one hand, and increased (risk of) side-effects on the other.  Only the prescribing doctor and the patient, discussing it together, can weigh these.

Effexor does need to be tapered (stopped gradually), especially at higher doses.  Your boyfriend&#039;s doc can advise him how when it&#039;s time.  Effexor isn&#039;t a cure for crack addiction, nor will stopping it cause a drug relapse.  It&#039;s a separate issue.  Your boyfriend should be in substance abuse treatment, e.g., Cocaine Anonymous, or a more intensive program.</description>

		<description>A medical professional - particularly his - would be the best person to answer this question...not a site such as this.  My brother started on that a month or two ago, and has been very happy with it (he had previously been on other anti-depressants, usually opting to self medicate with other means).</description>
