I am not sure what state you live in but where I am from, they actualy changed the law of how severe the punishment for crack possession or sale and delivery and so on. All though there truly is no difference from the two, except the way its used and how the dealers add stuff to it for people to use, I believe there should be no grey areas cocaine is cocaine no matter how it's done. I was addicted to cocaine at the age of 15, at the age of 17 I learned how to add stuff to it in order to cook it into a rock, then called freebase now called crack. I am now 37 and I am clean after 21 years of drug use I have finally been 1 year 4 months without it and I feel great. I have seen so many people, succesful people that is, lose alot. And the thing that we as users don't realize is we are not just hurting ourselves but it's the people in our lives that love us who suffers the most. Especially if we have children, and our parents our spouse friends and so on. We become so manipulative in our every day life that no matter what takes to get the drug we will do it. Then we have the chance of putting our family in danger of drive by shootings when we get the drugs on credit and don't have the money to pay. I have seen alot in 21 Years of addiction and I am seeing it more clearly now that I am free from it all. All though I seen it in my addiction I did not accept it (in denial) but now the veil has been removed and will never be over my eyes again. I know I put alot in here but I just wanted to put it out there that we can be free, and it is only by the love and power of Jesus Christ that made it possible.

The argument is that a portion of the confiscated drug is actually baking soda which is harmless whereas powdered cocaine is purely cocaine and nothing else. However, they do not consider the fact that the mixture is not a mixture of two white powders, but a chemical blending of them.

Chemically speaking, pure cocaine is an acid salt where the combination of baking soda and cocaine is the basic salt of cocaine. Dealers know when they achieved the combination when the wet combination cooks completely and starts a "cracking" noise, thus the name "Crack."

Neurochemically speaking, the basic-salt form of cocaine is much more addictive than the acid-salt form. In the 1970's, freebasing allowed users to convert from the acid to basic forms - but it was pretty elaborate and messy.

Reintroducing the argument - crack is contains some baking soda - but the baking soda has made the drug more potent - so I think it is fair for dealers of a more potent substance to get longer sentencing.

Seems that black and crack kinda go hand and hand. The tv show cops would go off the air if their were no blacks and crack around. If you don't believe me just watch it a few times and keep track.

You need to look around your middle class neighborhood, and you will find meth addicts, crack addicts and drunks.Cocaine was a white man drug for a long time, until they sent it to the hood ,in a cheaper form.So get off your white horse and open your eyes .

you know what's even sadder?...that my uncle is a new york police officer and he's attested to seeing many of officers making deals with dealers who sell crack to protect them and keep them from getting arrested if the dealer gives the officer a cut....the system has been corrupted....how the hell can we expect people not to sell drugs, if some cops will keep the drug dealers out of jail?....everyone doesnt have the same mindframe, some of those drug dealers have been on their own since they were children and found a quick way to come up....this is why it's about more than just drugs, it's about the black youth, the youth in general, getting lost in the world, with no one to help pull them ashore....i'm not at ALL condoning drugs...but at the same time, it's deeper than just that one issue....

Harsher for cocaine. You need cocaine to make an affordable product like crack to addict the poor and dis-advantaged. The conspiracy to addict African-American users goes much higher up than the dealer. It is a tragedy what cocaine and its products have done to society in general, but purposely targeting African-Americans with crack is unspeakable!
I think our government needs to open its eyes and look at legalizing drugs. Drugs are always going to be around, because everything done to eradicate them at the source has failed to stop the flow or poisoned a lot of users with chemicals used to kill the plants. If drugs were legalized,
there would be quality control and hopefully restrictions on amounts to be purchased for consumption. Profits could be used to getting people off of drugs.
Many places are legalizing marijuana for medical use. It is probably the least harmful drug in our society, including alcohol. And it is the biggest cash crop in the USA.
Isn't there something wrong with this picture?

Being firmly against drugs, I think they should be legalized.
Why?

1) A child can go to a bad area and buy drugs. If you legalize it, you can sell it in stores, but only if you're 21 or over.

2) It would kill the black market, thus taking the dealers off the street.

3) The money can go into the economy, and not into crack dealers hands

4) The FDA would test it, thus making it safer.

5) There is no rational reason that drugs are illegal. And saying "they're bad for you" doesnt cut it. It's a free country. Cigarettes, fattening foods, and many other "bad" things are legal. It's up to the individual to decide not to use drugs.

this is a race and legal issue, and I do agree that they should carry equal sentences. we have lost the war on drugs. as long as they are so readily available, there are young people willing to experiment , and parents who aren't involved and paying attention, you will have drug use among teenagers. before there were these drugs, kids got drunk. same problem.

if we were all emotionally healthy and families were intact and truly nurturing, we wouldn't have this problem. but we sure do and locking up the millions who deal on the street is probably not the answer. are you willing to pay $30,000/year for every one of these dealers to be locked up with hard-core types? our budgets are already stretched to the max. there must be other, better solutions?
